Named for the county in which it resides, Alachua has become an icon on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. Commissioned by the State of Florida, Art in State Buildings program, the sculpture is located at the entrance to the Marston Science Library, Computer Science and Engineering Building.
Alachua is comprised of four separate sections that stand structurally independent from one another and do not touch. Facing the building, two structures stand to the left and two structures stand to the right. The separate units come together to form a gateway- allowing passage into the building. Upon its installation, the sculpture sparked an enormous amount of controversy and found itself the topic of an intense debate throughout Florida’s newspapers. Alachua then, nicknamed “The French Fries From Hell” has now become a landmark and meeting place for students, an integral part of campus life. The yellow sculpture is now more endearingly referred to by students as simply, “The French Fries”.
