Rocher Du Diamont
1980 13’H x 20’L x 20’D
Painted Aluminum
Originally built for the internationally acclaimed Margulies collection at Grove Isle in Coconut Grove, Florida, Rocher Du Diamont is now at the Martin Z. Margulies Sculpture Park at Florida International University in Miami.
Rocher Du Diamont was one of the earliest pieces after John’s move to Florida from Chicago and is named after the singular “Diamond Rock” near Martinique in the Caribbean. The move to Florida gave John the opportunity to indulge in sailing and many of his titles from this era reflect ports of call. A more tropical lifestyle also played out in his work, looser playful compositions painted in fanciful colors made an appearance, generally in the smaller scale works.
